How it turns timed minutes and the drive into a weekly mowing price
Six tabs take you from your truck payment to a sent quote, and after the season, a look at which lawns paid.
- Start HereThe order to fill things in, and what yellow, grey and red cells mean. Plan on one evening.
- Shop SetupTruck and trailer, insurance, storage, phone and software, your crew and you, turned into one break-even rate per billable hour, plus a running cost for each mower.
- Price ListTrimmer line, mix gas, blades, bags and mulch, each with the date you last checked the price.
- QuoteMinutes to mow, trim, edge and blow, the drive from your last stop and the checklist. It gives the price per visit, per month and per season for each frequency, plus a small start-up charge for an overgrown first cut.
- Customer QuoteThe page the homeowner sees: the service, each frequency's price and your terms.
- Job LogEvery quote, won or lost, and the real hours each lawn took.
What is a break-even rate? It is what each billable hour on a lawn, the drive between stops included, has to bring in to pay the crew, the owner, the truck and the insurance, before a dollar of profit. Charge above it and the difference is profit. The lawn mowing hourly rate page shows how it's built.
Prefilled example built-in
The file comes filled in with a made-up lawn care company and its $54.71 weekly mowing quote, so you see a finished quote before you type in your own numbers.
The example company is an owner plus one crew member, with a break-even of $58.12 per billable hour. The lawn is a weekly mow, trim, edge and blow on front and back lawns, about 6,500 sq ft of turf, with an open back yard and clippings mulched.
| A | B | |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Part of the price, per weekly visit | Amount |
| 2 | Line, gas, mowing, trimming, edging, blowing and the drive | $35.79 |
| 3 | Easy-to-miss minutes (loading, extra trimming) | $7.28 |
| 4 | Cushion, materials markup and profit | $11.64 |
| 5 | Price per weekly visit | $54.71 |
That is $236.89 a month and $1,895.10 for an 8-month season. The $11.64 a visit is kept after every wage, the owner's included, and the lawn earns $77.95 per labour hour. The same lawn every 2 weeks is $66.27 a visit, because longer grass takes longer. The full walk-through is on how much to charge for lawn mowing.
$252
That is what the easy-to-miss lines alone added to a season of weekly mows for this example lawn. It is about 5 times what the calculator costs. Miss them once and the file has paid for itself.

Why the going rate for a lawn your size stops paying
Most mowing prices start from what the next company charges or a rule like so much per acre. Those numbers can't see the gate that forces the push mower, the beds the customer added in June, or the lawn that's 20 minutes off your route.
Here is how it adds up. Say a new fence means an extra 10 minutes a visit on a lawn you mow weekly. At the example's $58.12 break-even rate, that is $9.69 of paid time every visit, or about $336 over an 8-month season of weekly cuts. On a $55 lawn, that is most of the profit gone.
The calculator prices each lawn from the minutes it takes first, then shows the per-visit, monthly and season price. You still get a simple weekly number for the customer, but it's one that covers that yard.
Loading, gates, new beds and the other mowing minutes it catches
The Quote tab won't mark a quote ready until each of these lines has a Yes, No or N/A:
- Unloading, loading and strapping down the mower, at every stop, all season.
- Extra trimming around new beds, trees and fence lines, because the lawn in August isn't always the one you quoted in spring.
- A narrow gate that forces the push mower into the back yard.
- Bagging and dump runs for customers who want clippings taken away.
- Blades, line, plugs and filters, the small wear on every lawn.
- Callbacks to fix missed spots. Left as No in the example on purpose, so the warning stays until you put a number on a return trip.

Who it's for: solo mowers and small lawn crews
It fits solo operators and lawn crews of up to about 15 people doing residential and small commercial mowing, priced by the visit. If you mow alone out of a pickup, you enter just yourself; if you run two trucks, you enter both crews. A small city lot or a full acre, each lawn gets its own minutes, so it fits whatever your route looks like.
It is not for big companies already running a full estimating system, homeowners checking what mowing should cost, or fertilizer and weed control programs priced per application. If you only want your hourly number for now, the free true hourly rate calculator does that part.
Stop pricing lawns from what the next company charges. Price every mow from your own minutes, drive and costs, catch the time that usually gets missed, and see which lawns made money.
