Price wallets, belts, bags and gift orders from your own costs

You enter what your leather shop costs to run once, and every piece after that is priced from your hides, your hours and your machines.

  • Know what an hour at your bench really costs Rent or your home share, booth fees, ads, tools and your own wage become one break-even rate per hour.
  • Price the whole piece, not just the leather Leather by the square foot, thread, edge paint, hardware, laser time, skiving, stitching and the gift box each get a line.
  • Quote by the piece and by the order One wallet, 25 or 50 are priced side by side, so a corporate client sees the price break and you see why a single custom piece costs more.
  • Stop working for free on setup The pattern, the logo file, the proof piece and the post office run sit on a checklist that has to be answered before the quote is ready.
  • Send a clean quote a client can sign off A one-page customer quote with price breaks, deposit and leather terms, ready to print or save as a PDF.
  • See which orders made money The Job Log keeps every quote, won or lost, with the real hours, so the custom tote that ran long shows up.

How it turns hides, bench minutes and laser time into a wallet price

Six tabs, in the order a leather shop uses them. Shop costs go in once, hide prices get updated when your supplier changes them, and each order gets its own quote.

  1. Start HereWhich yellow cells to fill in first, in the order a leather shop needs them. Setup takes one evening.
  2. Shop SetupYour yearly costs, you and any stitcher, plus a laser, skiver or clicker press, turned into a break-even rate per hour.
  3. Price ListHides, sides, bellies and panels turned into cost per square foot, plus thread, edge paint, hardware and pouches, each with the date you last checked it.
  4. QuoteLeather and hardware per piece, setup once and minutes per piece for each step, bought-in boxes or stamps, the checklist, and the price at four quantities.
  5. Customer QuoteThe one page your client sees: price breaks, deposit and terms such as sign-off before cutting and natural grain marks.
  6. Job LogOnce the wallets ship, you enter the hours they really took and see whether the order paid.

What is a break-even rate? It is what one hour at the bench has to bring in to cover your wage, your stitcher, your machines and every other shop cost, before any profit. Time spent on photos, listings and markets is unpaid, so the rate is higher than the wage you pay yourself. The true hourly rate guide explains it in more detail.

Prefilled example built-in

The file comes filled in with a made-up leather company and its $2,770.51 wallet quote, so you see a finished quote before you type in your own numbers.

The sample shop is an owner and a part-time stitcher with a laser engraver, and its break-even is $54.88 per billable hour.

The order is 25 card wallets for a realty company's client gifts: English bridle, hand saddle-stitched, a laser-engraved logo, painted edges, each in a pouch and a printed gift box.

AB
1 Part of the price Amount
2 Leather, supplies, labour, machine time and gift boxes $1,627
3 Easy-to-miss costs $399
4 Markup, cushion and profit $744
5 Price for 25 wallets $2,770.51

That is $110.82 a wallet. The $744 is kept after every cost, the owner's wage included, and the order earns about $85.54 per labour hour against the $54.88 floor. The full walk-through is on how to price leather goods.

$399

That is what the easy-to-miss lines alone added to this one example quote. It is about 7 times what the calculator costs. Miss them once and the file has paid for itself.

Why pricing wallets by what friends will pay loses money

A lot of leatherworkers set their first prices by what feels safe to ask, then keep them. That price has nothing to do with how much leather the piece uses, how long it took to stitch, or whether the laser ran on it.

Take a card wallet that uses 1.2 square feet of leather and about 45 minutes of work in a batch. At a $54.88 shop rate the time alone is about $41, before leather, thread, edge paint, the pouch or any profit. A $50 price feels fair to a friend and covers almost none of that.

The calculator prices each piece from its own leather, minutes and machines first, then adds profit you choose on purpose. The price per wallet comes out at the end, and it covers your costs on that order.

Patterns, proofs, packing and the other leather costs it catches

The Quote tab won't mark a quote ready until each of these lines has a Yes, No or N/A:

  • Pattern, template and logo file setup before the first cut.
  • Talking with the client: taking the order and settling colour, thread and logo placement.
  • A proof piece in the real leather, so the client signs off before you cut 25. Changes after that are a change order.
  • The mis-cut or scratched piece you pay for twice.
  • Packing each piece and printing labels.
  • The drive to the post office. Left as No in the example on purpose, so the warning stays until you set your own number.

Exactly what you get

One spreadsheet file, sent as an instant download the moment you pay. It opens in Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets. No subscription, no app and no login.

  • The six-tab calculator, ready for your own leather, hours and machines.
  • A complete example leather shop, with a finished 25-wallet gift order you can study before you start.
  • Leather customer terms you can edit, including sign-off before cutting, natural grain marks and no returns on custom pieces.
  • A Job Log that shows your win rate and which orders ran over their hours, the habit covered in job costing.

Who it's for: leather makers and small shops of 1 to 15 people

It fits solo makers and small leather shops (about 1 to 15 people) selling wallets, belts, bags and small goods online, at markets or to order, and anyone quoting corporate or wedding gift orders. Hand-stitched one-offs or laser-engraved batches of 50, it works the same way, because every leather price, minute and machine rate in it is yours.

It is not for factories with an ERP system that already tracks unit cost, anyone after a table of leather prices by country, or leather furniture and car seat repair, which is priced per job on site. To see your rate before buying, try the free true hourly rate calculator.

Stop pricing leather goods by what feels safe. Price every piece and every gift order from your own costs, catch the setup and packing time that goes missing, and see which orders made money.

Questions owners ask

Is this a leather cost calculator or a pricing calculator?

Both. The Price List turns a hide, side or panel into a cost per square foot and per piece, and the Quote tab adds your time, machine time, overhead and profit to reach the price.

Is there a subscription?

No. One payment, one .xlsx file you keep. Your leather prices, machine rates and order history stay in your own copy.

Does it work in Google Sheets?

Yes. Open it in Excel, or upload it to Google Drive and open it with Sheets. It is a spreadsheet, not an app, so there is nothing to log in to.

Can it price a laser engraver's time?

Yes. The laser, skiver, sewing machine and clicker press each get a cost per running hour from what they cost you a year, and only the pieces that use a machine carry its cost.

Can I quote a corporate gift order at several quantities?

Yes. The Quote tab prices your main quantity and three more side by side. In the sample, one logo card wallet is $702.47, 25 are $110.82 each and 50 are $98.49 each.

Does it list leather prices by country?

No. The sample leather prices are placeholders. Enter what your own supplier charges, by weight and tannery, and the Price List reminds you when a price is getting old.

How long does the leather calculator take to set up?

About one evening. You enter your shop costs, machines and leather prices once. After that, a new wallet or bag quote is the leather per piece, the minutes per step and the checklist.

I'm not good with spreadsheets. Can I still use it?

Yes. You only type in the yellow cells, the grey cells do the math, and a red cell flags an old leather price or a checklist line nobody answered. The sample wallet order shows every cell filled in.

Every piece I make is different. Will it still work?

Yes. There is no fixed price per wallet inside it. A one-off custom tote and a batch of 50 key fobs each get their own leather, steps and setup time, so each is priced from what it really takes.
